About This Calculator
This tool estimates how much of your year is spent on “Work” versus “Life” time,
based on average daily and yearly inputs. It's intended to be used to quantitatively express how changes made to your day
affect your amount of free time over the course of a year. For example, if you'd like to account for a change in commute time,
select Working Hours/work day as the variable and vary it from 8 hours (no commute) to 10 hours (1 hour commute each way).
It’s derived from the original Excel Work–Life Balance userform
built for MechE Designs.
How It Works
- Assumes 365 days/year and 24 hours/day.
- Subtracts sleeping hours and sick time from total available time.
- Calculates total working hours from (workdays × workday length) + overtime.
- “Work %” = working hours ÷ (total hours − sleep − sick).
- “Life %” = 1 − Work %.
Key Assumptions/Notes
- Does not account for other daily activities like chores, cooking meals, eating, etc.
- 52 weeks per year, with 2 weekend days per week (i.e. standard 5 day work week/104 days off).
- All weekends are considered non-working days.
- Vacation days, holidays, and sick days reduce the number of available working days.
- Sleeping hours apply every day (including weekends, holidays, etc.).
- Overtime is added directly to the total annual work hours.
- Days spent sick detract from amount of Life time (i.e. if you're sick you don't gain extra free time).
Use the “Variable” selector to see how changes in vacation days, working hours, or sleep affect your
percent of “Life” time. The chart updates automatically based on your chosen range.
